1-25. Data Window

The Data Window provides the user with an “at-a-glance” view at selected signals.  This view includes the name, value, engineering units, raw value, and a graphical bar graph of each selected signal.

How do I add signals?

  1. Signals can be added by right-clicking in the Data Window and selecting “Add signals”.  This will open a dialog connecting to the associated database(s).  Select the desired signals and click “OK”.
  2. A signal can be dragged from another window into the Data Window.
  3. Signals can be dragged directly from the Symbol Explorer into the Data Window.

User defined signals can also be added to the Data Window by right-clicking and selecting “User defined”.  The following information must be known about the signal in order to add a user defined signal:

  • Message ID
  • Signal name – though this is merely for readability by the end user and can be any meaningful name desired.
  • Start bit
  • Bit count
  • Value type
  • Format
  • Any scaling values required for the value to make sense

What changes can be made?

The Data Window is preconfigured to display data from selected signals; the displayed values cannot be configured.  However, some display features can be updated by the user if desired.

  • Colors – by right-clicking in the Data Window, different color settings can be set
o Font – changes the color of the text
o Background – changes the background color of the window
o Stripe layout – toggles on and off the alternating striping pattern in the Data Window
  • Font – the font size and type can be changed to enhance viewing by the end user
  • Blank rows can be added to help sorting and grouping of signals
  • Name display – changes how the name of the signal is displayed in the Data Window
  • Time settings – how often the Data Window updates during the measurement

How many windows can be opened?

There is no limit to the number of Data Windows that can be opened within one configuration.

What does the spinning wheel mean?

The spinning wheel in the first column is an activity indicator.  Depending on whether or not the wheel is spinning, this will provide information on the type of message being looked at, and how frequently it is updating.

When the activity wheel is spinning, it indicates that the signal is a part of a cyclic message, but the value received is the same as the previous receipt.

When the activity wheel is not spinning, it indicates that the signal is part of an event based message, and has not yet been received.
